The American visual artist Craig Dongoski worked in his residence in July 2010 from the contour of the river Paiva, through successive iterations and expressive techniques, drawings, sounds from the river and the surrounding context, sounds from the contact of the pen with the paper, sound poetry etc. etc. Laterally, Craig recorded a short video where he used a rope attached to the video camera, which was made rotate. This experience eventually connected to the project’s concept, since the result was a kind of an additional (and unexpected) countour of river. After the residency, Craig joined additional audio to the video from some experiments he conducted while in Nodar.

After their residency in April 2010, Yasuno and Masayo met in Japan in June and they took the opportunity to further work on their project.

For the exhibition in Vila Nova de Paiva, they plan to hang an umbrella which functions as a screen and speakers placed upside down from the ceiling. It will be also filled with a bit of water.

Also, a small mobilé like construction, that holds the ice cubes will be hung from the ceiling as well and a video projector will be hung from the ceiling (if not, a mirror, which will reflect the video projection into the umbrella). A small freezer will be placed in the gallery space nearby our installation to produce ice cubes for the visitors to hang into the installation.

Here is a rough drawing of the installation:

And also some photos of the test Masayo and Yasuno made:

Lasse-Marc Riek was part of the cycle of Paivascapes # 1 artist residences in late April and early May 2010. Part of the field work of this german sound artist consisted in recording silences in churches and chapels along the course of the Paiva river, corresponding to the section between Castro Daire and Nodar (the same section that the artist traveled on foot in the first stage of his residency). These recordings were a follow up of other churches’ recordings made by the artist in Germany and in other European countries.

Here is the list of churches and chapels and their geographic coordinates:

Saturday, May 1, 2010:

Church of Parada de Ester (Castro Daire): 40 ° 56 ’01.19 “, -8 ° 3′ 27.49″
Church of Ester (Castro Daire): 40 ° 54 ’58.11 “, -8 ° 1′ 34.28″
Church of Reriz (Castro Daire): 40 ° 54 ’13:51 “, -7 ° 59′ 32.81″
Chapel of Nodar (S. Pedro do Sul): 40 ° 55 ’7.73 “, -8 ° 3′ 36.10″

Sunday, May 2, 2010

Chapel of Portela (Mões, Castro Daire): 40 ° 51 ’46.91 “, -7 ° 52′ 3:23 ‘
Church of Mões (Castro Daire): 40 ° 52 ’4.23 “, -7 ° 53′ 7.83″
Chapel of Folgosa (Castro Daire): 40 ° 53 ’40.99 “, -7 ° 53′ 50.81″
Church of Pinheiro (Castro Daire): 40 ° 55 ’15:56 “, -7 ° 58′ 39.31 ‘

Monday, May 3, 2010

Church of Castro Daire: 40 ° 53 ’49.44 “, -7 ° 56′ 6.34″

An audio excerpt of silence recorded at the Church of Parada de Ester (better if heard with headphones):
(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Photo of the Ermida do Paiva by Lasse-Marc Riek. Interestingly this beautiful Romanesque chapel, located near Pinheiro, Castro Daire, ended up being the only one who could not be recorded due to a convoluted history with the local priest, which claimed a permit from the bishop in order to allow the access to the chapel, ending however not establishing any clear contact that could make the recording possible.

When the first group of field work ends their mission, we all decided to join the youths’ willingness to dive into the river with our intention to record a specific typology of summertime sounds, common in the Paiva river: the dives were accompanied by screams and laughs in which the innocence of a recently abandoned childhood and the enthusiasm of the recently discovered juvenile impulses where mixed together.

Already on the edge of Fráguas, we approached Ti Antonio who was harvesting hay on his field. In a speech marked by the years he asked the young woman who was recording if “it will then go on television?” and given a negative wave, he responded with a sincere and resigned “Oh shit!”.
